Carolyn & Henry

About The Wedding
Carolyn's mom Linda contacted me just after the new year for some help in planning Carolyn and Henry's fall wedding. The couple are native Atlantans and Westminster high school sweethearts (although they now live in New York City), and the parents are friends with each other, so it was shaping up to be a lovely [huge] local celebration. In the end, we had 415 guests, including some refugees from Hurricane Matthew who were supposed to attend weddings on the coast that unfortunately got moved. We had an absolutely picture-perfect fall day here in Midtown, however. I'm always grateful for that!
Both the guys and the girls spent the morning relaxing and getting ready in different areas of the Club. After photos of each group around the property (which was extra fun because they got to observe the transformation of the ballroom as it was unfolding), we traveled to the church in the trolley. As long-time members of All Saints, Carolyn's parents were able to persuade their old pastor (who had moved to DC after a long tenure at the church) to return to officiate the ceremony. As I watched Carolyn process down the aisle, I reflected that she must be recalling all her times walking that same path as an altar server, and how special that must be to be returning as a bride.
After some lovely sunset photos in the church courtyard, we made our way back to the Club in the trolley. Did I happen to mention it was Gay Pride weekend in Atlanta, and the Club is adjacent to Piedmont Park, the festival headquarters? Luckily, we did not experience any delays, and we got a great view of the celebrations as we passed by. I love the diversity of Atlanta, and how all different types of celebrations can coexist!
We arrived at the Club to find a ballroom absolutely transformed into a garden courtyard setting. As always, Laura with Faith Flowers outdid herself! I especially loved the lighted trees placed around the perimeter of the room, and the hanging lanterns at the entrance to the ballroom. Carolyn's father is a past president of the Club, so this wedding was kind of a big deal. The guests enjoyed an open bar and so many different delicious food options, including a grilled cheese station! Linda did not want the guests to have to wait for anything, so they had already been eating and drinking by the time we arrived. Carolyn and Henry enjoyed a leisurely date before being introduced, cutting the cake (a four-tier masterpiece covered with sugar lace made to match Carolyn's gown), and dancing with each other and their parents. Then, there was nothing to interrupt the party as the band kicked into high gear! I was gratified to see than not only did Carolyn and Henry never leave the dance floor, they never left each other's sides the whole night. So sweet! The party rose to the stratosphere when we passed out tambourines, sunglasses and glowsticks on the dance floor (as well as late night snacks), and we ended on a high note, sending the couple off in a vintage car, their way lit by sparklers, to their St. Lucia honeymoon.
My Favorite Detail
All the bridesmaids wore t-shirts from their hometowns while getting ready. So cute and different than the standard robes or oversized monogrammed shirts!
My Favorite Moment
As the married couple returned up the aisle, giddy with happiness, Henry was brought to tears by the unexpected sight of his grandmother seated at the foot of the aisle. She had been in the hospital just that morning, and we thought she would not make it to the wedding, but through force of will she arrived, albeit a bit late! That is dedication for you, and a testimony to the power of love.

Comments From The Family
"Daria, everything went SO well!! Because you handled everything so well behind the scenes on Carolyn's big day, I could really enjoy all of the preparations and know that you "had my back"…and Carolyn's too of course. She mentioned that you had tried to help her blot out that unfortunate red wine stain with some club soda….THANK YOU! That was just something that was impossible for me to handle with that large of a crowd in the Ballroom. The wedding ceremony was just marvelous also. Everything went like clockwork!! Thanks for all of your "behind the scenes" efforts there, too! Good job controlling the transportation, trolley, etc. Thanks Daria….We were a great team!!" ~ Linda (MOB)
